RACE CITY OPEN LAUNCH
The Race City Open is a government-sponsored skateboarding contest bringing people from all over the Southeast to Mooresville, NC for community building and competition.

In order to highlight the construction of the new Mooresville Skatepark, the Visit Mooresville tourism committee approached The Boardr, an international skateboarding organization, to be a part of their newest competition series.
The goal was to build the local community through a multi-day event of skateboarding, art, and competition.

This was my first experience working with local government and so there were restrictions on events we wanted to plan as well as budgeting. This also meant that the visuals and logo we were creating needed to be much more palletable for the common eye. For this reason, the logo was inspired by preexisting NASCAR plaques that are a part of Mooresville historic walking path.
The feedback loop and ensuring everyone was on the same page led to a decent amount of rework and redesign in the early stages. Oftentimes as I was sharing final designs, new information about how the event would be marketed was coming out in real time, causing final designs to need to be revisited.
Lastly, time constraints were a massive challenge. I was brought in on the project about a month before the actual launch date. This meant that many of the ideas I pitched as far as novel ways to engage with the audience and build awareness for the events were just not feasible with how quickly the event needed to be launched.

In addition to generating a logo, brand assets, and print collateral, the event gained national traction when posted by Thrasher Magazine, a website averaging 1.5M visits per month.
In total across two days of events, the city of Mooresville, NC estimated live attendance of 500+ people. On social media, leading up to and during the event, content generated 45,000+ views and 450+ shares.
The success of the first Race City Open led to the City of Mooresville creating a committee specifically for this event for years to come.
