Novant Health COVID Vax Flow (UI/UX)

Novant Health COVID Vax Flow

Novant Health is a four-state healthcare system, based in Charlotte, NC, servings hundreds of thousands of patients.

  • In December 2020 COVID-19 vaccinations were made available to the public. During the first few months, vaccine demand was very high but supply was very low.

As a result, Novant Health required an expedited flow that could triage patients, reduce wasted vaccines, and prioritize first responders and high-risk populations.

The flow needed to be scalable as new brands of vaccines were released and needed to be flexible for users scheduling boosters.

  • I led the team towards a single page, single question solution. Part of this decision was due to my imposter-syndrome as a Product Designer and fear of failure. I understood the gravity and importance of what we were doing and wanted to implement the simplest experience with the least risk for breakage.

I foresaw us encountering a lot of dependencies with data. We needed a single solution that worked for three (soon to be four) different vaccine brands all with varying supply. Each brands had different dosages they were administering with unique eligibility and safety criteria.

There was no time to create a working prototype (R.I.P. Sketch & InVision,} so I was responsible for dev handoff and QA. I walked Developers through the final flow and noted functionality that needed to be conditional.

  • Other than gathering vaccine eligibility and dosage criteria no research went into this project. This decision was made because of the expedited nature of the client’s ask.

  • This project tested my understanding of systems and user flows (FIG. 1 & 2). Different vaccine information needed to be displayed at multiple points in the flow to give user’s confidence and ensure their safety. And each of those instances required multiple content variations that were dependent on user actions earlier in the flow.

  • The entire project request, ideation, design, development, and QA were completed in 4-5 days. Since it’s launch, the experience has booked 60,000+ vaccine appointments in the state of North Carolina.

In the years following, the single-step flow design has been modified to help triage for other types of appointments for Novant Health as well.
